Once upon a time I was walking down a very busy street. There I saw a boy, about the age of 12 or less.
One can be sure that normally a boy like this would be carrying a school bag and on his way from school but the situation was much different than what one would expect. He was actually begging, putting his hand in front of others to ask for coins or food. I was shocked to see it and at that moment I retreated to my past and when my whole family was at my service, to arrange school bags, breakfast or a lunch box but here the situation was totally different. After a few minutes I regained my thoughts and asked the child, “son why you begging? why don't you go to school.”
He started staring at me and that was the perfect opportunity for him to give me an arrogant answer but when he starts conversing with me again, there was a pain in his voice and his words carried the weight of years beyond his actual age. He made the statement “you have a father”, which I said yes. Then he said “you have a brother and sister”, which I again replied yes. After a brief and terrible silent moment, he said “I don’t have any siblings but i have my mother. She can’t walk and I care for her, bringing her food. No one is here to feed us, so if I went to school, how could I feed my mother?”
The young boy living in a man’s world said “I wish I was in school as my mom always wanted me to get an education but how can I do this? I'm living in a society where all the people are deaf and blind, where they don’t have any sense or feelings for others, they never think about the inequalities that people suffer through, the people that don't have food for eating.
They never think about how important it is that all children get an education, that without an education, these children are doomed to a life of poverty, and that every parents wish is that their children have a better life than they did.” After a moment, silent tears poured down his face, and I in turn, began to cry for the tragic situation I saw in front of me. I felt ashamed because I was also a member of that society, I never went hungry, was getting a very good education, had many opportunities for leisure time, never did I think about the most basic comforts, because they were all provided for me.
I had become so blind in my struggle to achieve greater material things and success, that it had made me greedy and selfish. How could about the people around me, those that did not have what I had, those that did not have the most basic right to become educated, that had to make the hardest life decisions, often at a very young age. How have we become so callous, so selfish and so blind to those around us that need our help?
