Is breakfast the most important meal of the day?

April 10, 2015 Thanh Nguyen Tu

Date:  Sunday April 5th, 2015

Team A: (Yes) Marwa, Amine, Alifiah, Nur, Miranda,Trista, Daylight, Sandra, Mohamed, Osama

Team B: (No) Rebecca, Rick, Daylight, Sunita, Selly, Earth

Team C: (On the fence) Johny, Masato, Kiyan Khan, Sara, Ibrahim

Moderator: Tata

Team A Summary:

  • Improves concentration in school and gives more energy throughout the day and something sweet provides energy and concentration
  • Gives strength to take care of daily responsibilities
  • It helps students to perform better in school and people to work harder in their jobs, breakfast is like the battery in your car
  • People need breakfast to perform at their optimum levels, people in China consider breakfast to be extremely important
  • Some people will miss breakfast and substitute coffee and cigarettes, this is very unhealthy.  People need breakfast after sleeping, to make up for energy lost during sleeping as well as to provide energy for the day
  • One member said she has never skipped breakfast, ever

Team B Summary:

  • The body is designed to work the best when having several small meals throughout the day, not necessarily three traditional meals
  • One member stated that she never eats breakfast, that using that time for sleeping is more important to her and that if she eats breakfast, she will be too full to eat lunch
  • The body does not consume as much energy when sleeping, just the major vital functions, so breakfast is not as important to providing energy as lunch is.  In general, there would be about 3-4 hours of activity after breakfast, compared to 6-7 hours of activity following lunch, so lunch is more important to provide energy for a longer period of time
  • It’s not so important when you eat, as what you eat, and balancing when/what is most important

Tata summarized the positions of the two Teams

  • A= losing weight, prevents disease, provides energy
  • B= eating small meals helps, consider the time of day and required energy

 Team C Summary:

  • This was a very interesting debate and Team C asked some very good questions before making their decision
    • Masato= Team B
    • Johny= Team B
    • Ibrahim= Team A
    • Sara= Team A
    • Kiyan Khan- Not Available
  •  Because we required a tiebreaker, Tata voted Team B, therefore Team B won the debate
